Doctors' office flips switch on solar energy system - abc27

A doctors' office "flipped the switch" Tuesday on the largest solar energy system in Chambersburg.

Advanced Solar Industries installed 96 solar panels at Chambersburg Gastroenterology Associates on 5th Avenue.

"They are tied to their 600-amp breaker feed in the basement and it just back-feeds into there," ASI foreman Daniel Stoltzfus said. "If they have a lot of loads, they'll use it up and if they're not using that much electricity, it'll go back onto the grid."

The project cost about $180,000.

"It is expensive in the beginning, but you can put on as much as you want," Stoltzfus said. "Some people put on just to help with their electricity bill and some people put on enough for what they use, or more."

In this case, ASI said about a quarter of the office's total power will come from the sun.

"Right now they're probably producing what they're using," Stoltzfus said. "But then at night, they'll still be using some and the sun won't be out."

Stoltzfus said businesses and homeowners are eligible for a 30 percent tax credit when they install solar panels to power a building.
