Hertz To Go Solar; The Company Will Install 16 Solar Power Systems - AltTransport

Car rental companies have spent the past several months trying to one-up each other when it comes to environmental initiatives, and now Hertz just announced that it plans to install solar power systems at 16 of its car rental facilities by this fall, with the intention of eventually expanding further.

Sixteen of the company’s facilities will be retrofitted with a total of over 2.3 MW of solar photovoltaic systems to begin with. The solar project was initially piloted in December at the Denver International Airport. A 1,018 panel, 235 kW system was placed there and Hertz said it is expected to produce 342,766 Kwh of AC output and will offset approximately 650,000 pounds of CO2 annually.

Currently, Hertz has 8,400 locations in 146 countries worldwide, and also operates the Advantage car rental brand at 26 U.S. airports.

The other stations being worked on are in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

“Hertz leads the industry in sustainable practices,” said Richard Broome, Senior Vice President of Hertz. “From our commitment to electric vehicles and other low emission vehicles to our implementation of reduced water usage and now our solar program, we are at the forefront of integrating sound environmental practices with pro-consumer service, efficiency and growth strategies.”

Earlier this year, Hertz said that it would start renting out the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle to its customers. The company will also offer the Nissan Leaf this year at select rental locations in the U.S. and Europe, while it will start renting out the all electric Coda EV sedan in California in 2012.

It currently offers a “Green Collection” in its U.S. fleet, including the Smart ForTwo, the Toyota Prius and the Nissan Altima hybrid, CNET reports.

Not to be outdone, Enterprise, which operates Alamo Rent A Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and National Car Rental brands, said it would reduce both energy use and costs by 20 percent over the five years to 2015. The company plans to invest $150 million over the next five years to meet its goals. Enterprise has also begun to rent the Chevrolet Volt, and will be offering the Nissan LEAF and Coda EV when they become available.

As we’ve said in the past, EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles fit well with car rental companies because it gives customers an opportunity to experiment with the new technology before they decide to purchase it. It also helps them learn more about charging infrastructure and the different options available to plug-in cars. Besides, most people who rent cars, use them for shorter trips, eliminating range anxiety.

GlassPoint's Solar Power Gives New Life To Old Oil Fields - Forbes (blog)

Feb. 28 2011 - 5:13 pm | 479 views | 1 recommendation | GlassPoint's new solar house for Berry Petroleum.

Last week upstart solar company Glasspoint unveiled what at first glance seems to be a bizarre new approach to solar power. In the middle of a 100-year-old oil field in Bakersfield, Calif. owned by Berry Petroleum, it has built a glass house, roughly a half-acre in size. Inside the house are flimsy solar reflecting mirrors, little more than curved sheets of aluminum foil, suspended by wires. As the sun passes overhead a motorized system slowly adjusts the wires, positioning the mirrors to catch optimal rays. The mirrors concentrate the sunlight and focus it on a network of water-filled pipes suspended from the roof of the glasshouse. The water boils into steam, which is continuously injected deep down into Berry’s oilwells where it loosens up and pushes out gunky crude oil.

Using the sun to help produce crude oil is a pretty neat trick. And it could have an enormous impact. Berry (and other big Kern County players like Aera, Chevron and Occidental) have been using steam to coax out crude oil for decades. But until now that steam has been generated almost exclusively by burning natural gas to heat water boilers. In this way, the Kern County fields are responsible for more than a quarter of all the natural gas consumed in California. Glasspoint’s invention could change all that, and eventually change the entire solar industry.

As Glasspoint Chief Executive Rod MacGregor explained in an interview with Forbes, the biggest cost driver in the installation of solar panels is how to deal with the wind. Install a panel outdoors and its large flat surface area makes it like a giant sail. The wind just wants to blow it away, so installers have to use steel structures anchored in concrete to keep the mirrors rigid enough that they can be focused precisely to catch the rays. They heavier the panel, the more robust must be the hydraulic actuators used to move it.

Thus arise the benefits of installing your panels in the wind-free confines of a glass box. Glass houses have been in mass production for agriculture for hundreds of years. The glass panels, steel frames and water pipes are easily manufactured around the world. The mirrors are thin sheets of aluminum. “Our raw material is a tiny fraction of the cost” of more common outdoor systems, says MacGregor, and unlike new photovoltaic cells, there’s no requirement for exotic metals like gallium and indium. Maintenance is easier. The houses are dehumidified so moisture doesn’t condense on the mirrors and trap dust like in open air systems, which need to be regularly hosed off.

I’m usually very cynical when it comes to solar technology. The idea of getting clean, green energy from the sun is wonderful, but two problems plague the solar power industry. Price and scalability. For most commercial and residential solar systems the payback period is a decade or more, equating to a cost of anywhere from 20 to 30 cents per kwh versus 3 cents for coal-fired power, 5 cents for gas and an average of 10 cents for wind. And you can’t build them vast enough to make a dent in electricity demand.

But the value proposition that Glasspoint offers is something different. McGregor explains that he’s not competing with solar plants built for electric generation. Glasspoint’s offering only has to compete with the oil companies’ costs of making steam from natural gas. The glass house it built on Berry’s field took six weeks start to finish. It has enough mirrors to offset 1 million BTU an hour of natural gas needs–that’s an admittedly tiny amount, less than $100 worth a day.

But build more glass houses and it will add up. MacGregor won’t say what the house cost to erect, only that the long-term cost per million BTU of solar energy will be roughly half the cost of gas, about $3 per million BTU. The payback period would be just a couple of years. If California ever gets around to passing its carbon cap-and-trade program, the payback could be even shorter.

But this is far from an instantaneous solution. MacGregor says that an oil field like Berry’s would likely need 100 acres of glass houses to satisfy its daytime steam needs (they’ll still need to use some gas after the sun sets). While Chevron, which uses an estimated 140 trillion BTU of gas in Kern County each year (that’s roughly $700 million of gas) would need more like 3,200 acres. All of the Kern County fields: 6,000 acres. Before you gasp, consider MacGregor’s assertion that Glasspoint’s houses take up just one-fifth the surface area of the tower-based solar system built by BrightSource that Chevron is currently testing for steam generation. (We’ll see what BrightSource has to say about that.)

The U.S. potential for solar-assisted steam generation is in California and the Permian Basin of Texas. But worldwide, the big prize is in the Middle East. McGregor has been spending lots of time pitching the technology to Oman’s national oil company. Oman used to have lots of natural gas, and even built an LNG export terminal. But since its oil production peaked in 2000, the country has had to redirect some of that gas in order to steam out tougher oil, preferring even to pay penalties to LNG customers that had contracted for supplies. Under those conditions, the payback period for investing in Glasspoint would be even more favorable than in California.

Oman is not alone. In the Gulf region only Qatar is wholly self-sufficient in gas. Even Saudi Arabia is looking to reduce its oilfield gas needs so that it has enough to grow its industrial base. Abu Dhabi has gone so far as to hire Spain’s solar giant Abengoa and France’s Total oil company to build the Shams solar field,
one of the world’s largest, generating 100 mw from a square mile of parabolic troughs. It cost $600 million. For the same money you could build a gas-fired plant that generated five times the electricity, if only you had enough gas.

It’s very encouraging to see oil companies like Berry, Chevron and Total embracing solar power, especially when they are doing so not just to burnish green credentials but to lower the cost of producing oil. “The oil companies won’t do it if they don’t make money,” says MacGregor. The final benefit to building solar systems in oil fields–once their paid for they’ll just keep going and going, constantly lowering the marginal cost of generating steam and thus the cost of getting oil out. This gives oil company accountants the ability to increase their amount of economically recoverable reserves, the figure upon which all oil company values ultimately rest.

Think about it: most of America’s old oil fields weren’t mothballed because they ran out of oil, rather because they ran out of economically recoverable oil. There’s an estimated 300 billion barrels left that down there just waiting for a low-cost technology to come along. Solar power, whether through GlassPoint’s technology, or something else, could help keep the oil flowing for many years to come.

Let’s hope it works. Before going after the oilfield crowd, MacGregor was targeting solar as a greener way to make gypsum board drywall. That idea died and MacGregor changed tack, and its name, in 2009. The company is still in the VC stage; a primary investor is Chrysalix Energy Ventures.

Northland to develop wind farm with native company - Reuters

*Northland JV with Mnidoo Mnising Power on 60 MW wind farm

* SkyPower leases native land for 10 MW solar project (Recasts to include Skypower agreement)

OTTAWA Feb 10 (Reuters) - Clean energy developers Northland Power Inc NPI_u.TO (NPI.TO) and privately-held Skypower Ltd said on Thursday they will work with aboriginal groups in Ontario to develop wind and solar power projects.

Northland Power will develop a 60-megawatt wind farm in northern Ontario in a joint venture with aboriginal company Mnidoo Mnising Power.

Construction of the McLean's Mountain wind farm will begin mid-year on Manitoulin Island at the north end of Lake Huron, and the project is scheduled to start operations by January 2012.

Revenue from the project, which will generate enough electricity to power 17,500 homes, will be shared by the two companies.

Mnidoo Mnising was formed by an aboriginal tribal council on Manitoulin Island to develop renewable power projects.

Northland owns or has an economic interest in nine power projects that generate more than 1,050 MW of power from solar, wind, biomass and natural-gas-fired plants.

It also has 216 MW of wind, solar and run-of-river hydroelectric projects in advanced development after being awarded contracts under Ontario's feed-in-tarrif program.

SkyPower, one of Canada's biggest owners and developers of solar energy projects, said separately on Thursday that it will lease land in Thunder Bay, Ontario, from an aboriginal group to develop a 10-MW, 45,000-solar panel power project.

SkyPower said that once construction is completed this summer, the park is expected to be Canada's only large-scale solar park developed on native land.

It will be built on about 100 acres (40.5 hectares) of property owned by the Fort William First Nation.

Shares of Northland Power fell 7 Canadian cents to end at C$15.87 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday.

Solar Home Heat

Solar heat for homes is not a daydream. As energy prices rise and the global community talks of energy sources drying up, solar homes are becoming increasingly appealing to consumers. So is the idea of heating the home with solar energy. As a result, ways to heat a home with solar energy are becoming more affordable.

Solar heat for homes can be achieved in several ways. It is not simply a matter of placing photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and generating electricity for a furnace. That can be done, but other things can also be done to get solar heat for homes.

Passive Solar Heat for Homes

Passive solar is one of the simplest methods of acquiring solar heat for homes. Passive solar heating collects and distributes heat from the sun without external, mechanical pumping systems.

Passive solar heat for homes begins by positioning the solar home in such a way that it takes full advantage of winter sunlight to warm interior rooms and walls. In the northern hemisphere, a solar home will be positioned to give its main area southern exposure. In the southern hemisphere, a solar home will be positioned to give its main area northern exposure.

Passive solar heat for homes is also available through building materials and architectural design. A solar home should have many vertical windows on its winter sun exposure side to collect solar warmth. These windows should be glazed, and uncovered during the day to allow warmth to enter. As the sun goes down, shades and curtains should be drawn to retain the heat. The side of the solar home that gets summer sunlight should have fewer, and smaller, windows.

A passive solar home should feature masses of brick, concrete, stone, or adobe (mud bricks) that absorb and hold heat during the day, releasing it gradually as the air cools. These building materials should be used for walls and floors where the sunlight will hit them.

Passive solar heat for homes also requires thick insulation. Once heat has entered the solar home through large, glazed windows, insulation will help hold it there as the air cools. Placing the garage on the non-solar side and main living quarters on the "exposure" side also helps heat a solar home.

Active Solar Heat for Homes

Active solar systems for heating a solar home consist of "collectors" that collect solar energy, and electric fans or pumps to distribute collected heat. Heat is transferred by liquid or air, and can be stored to provide heat when the sun is not shining.

Solar air "collectors" will collect solar energy in air passing through the system. The air absorbs the sun's heat, and transfers it into the solar home. This works best for heating individual rooms, although some systems can heat larger areas with the use of pumps and fans. Solar air collectors for individual rooms can be mounted in an existing window.

Solar liquid "collectors" are more appropriate for central heating. These are the same type of collector as those used in solar water heating systems. Flat plate collectors are mounted, usually on a roof. Each collector contains water, antifreeze, or another liquid that will collect the solar energy. At a predetermined time, regulated by a controller, a circulating pump sends the fluid through the roof-top collector. The liquid is directed to a heat exchanger for immediate use, or sent to a storage tank for later use.

Active liquid solar heat for homes can be sent through pipes under the floor to maintain an even radiant heat at floor level. Radiant floor heating is ideal for liquid solar systems. It performs well, even at relatively low temperatures.

Combination Solar Heat for Homes

The best solar home will combine passive and active solar energy collection. Passive solar heating can reduce heating bills by nearly 50 percent. Active solar heating can supply 40 to 80 percent of your heat, depending on your local climate and the system's size. Put the two together, and you have a solar home that is comfortable and efficient.

If concrete floors topped with tile are already warmed by passive solar heating, an active system that send hot water through pipes in those floors will keep the solar home cozy and warm.

Free Heating

Aside from any initial costs for active solar energy systems, solar heat for homes can be free. It is clean and environmentally friendly. It leaves a smaller carbon footprint, too. Is it for you? That is worth serious consideration.

SOLAR AIR CONDITIONERS

A solar air conditioner is a cooling system functioning on solar power. It essentially absorbs energy from the sun's heat and light and coverts it into power so as to be able to drive the AC unit. Since air conditioners are mostly needed during hot months when sun is abundant, it presents the perfect opportunity to use a solar air conditioner.

Solar air conditioners function either through solar thermal energy or through photovoltaic conversion. The first uses heat collectors to collect heat, and warms water to drive absorption chillers; the second design converts photons into electricity to steer the AC fan.

ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR AIR CONDITIONERS

No matter what kind of solar AC it is, they are advantageous to use for a number of reasons. Like any other solar powered product, solar AC's are less noisy, less smelly, do not pollute, use an absolutely free energy resource and therefore lead to a decrease in the total electricity bill. The installation and maintenance of solar air conditioners is easier; spare parts can be found easily and cheaply. Cleaning a solar air conditioner is also less problematic. Moreover, installing a solar AC uses less space than a conventional AC since the actual cooling system has to be installed outside. Lastly, there is a cost recovery period of a solar air conditioner: for a solar thermal one, 2-5 years; for a PV one, 25-30 years.

SOLAR AIR CONDITIONER INDIA MARKET

In a country where the sun beats down incessantly for the majority of the year and power cuts remain a nagging nuisance, the Indian population would highly benefit from the usage of solar air conditioners. However, while solar ACs have been in the US since early 20th century, the solar air conditioners India market is in its nascent stage: it was only a couple of years ago that Reliance Industries first introduced the solar air conditioner in India. The solar air conditioner India cost of initial deployment is high; thus solar air conditioner India growth is inhibited. This is why solar air conditioning is yet to appear anywhere in the list of solar energy products installed currently in the country.

But the next decade could see significant change in the solar air conditioners India market, with the National Solar Mission up and running. Incentives are needed for households as well as corporates looking to grow green to realize the solar air conditioner India potential. Research is ongoing in the field as well not only to introduce mass production economies of scale to lower solar air conditioners India price, but also to commercially produce viable solar AC technology for cars.

A number of solar air conditioners India manufacturers do exist, though emphasis is on other more popular solar products such as water heaters and street lights, and many companies export their products. In a country where solar air conditioner manufacturers should thrive, there is much work to be done before solar ACs become a part of the Indian household.

Solar energy has come to its peak making our lives easier and even more convenient. The occurrence of such evolution of what solar energy has brought us has been made possible through constant intensive developmental studies with it. Researchers have created inventions which could literally make our lives less conventional. With the advancement of our technology these days, more and more theories have become laws and have brought new possibilities to realities. The American homeowner has the option to produce their own renewable energy from the sun and keep the energy savings every month. Homeowners who follow the steps and complete the requirements have a good chance of getting a residential solar energy system installed on their home on a rental basis.

Indeed, the production of solar panels is reduced by at least 50 percent on cloudy days, and maybe even down to just 50-10 percent of which can result in sunny days. But the point is that while actually doing their job, although at reduced levels. This is a great testament to the amazing technology of solar panels, so let's look a little deeper for it. Solar Home Heating Today

Solar home heating today is becoming the leading solar technology being used by people just like you. Using the Sun's free solar energy to heat your home and water is the next step to a sustainable lifestyle. Keep reading and you will think differently about solar heating.

Solar heating can dramatically reduce your need for conventional heating. Begin by plugging leaks and drips and save money with basic energy conservation. Energy conservation by far gives is the most cost effective strategy to lower your heating bill while reducing you carbon footprint. You will enjoy the results.

Now let's talk about solar hot water. Typically heating water for showers, clothes washing and washing dishes makes up about 15 to 20 percent of your heating bill. Heating domestic hot water with solar can reduce that monthly utility bill. When it comes to heating a home or business, radiant heat can do that job nicely. Rather than fossil fuels the solar heating captures the sun's free solar energy.

You experience solar heating every day. Have you ever got into your on a hot summer day?  You have just experienced solar heating. The sunlight heats the interior of the car. Because the heat is trapped in the car its temperature rises. The same principle applies to a solar collector that heats water.

Next are some real basics about how a solar hot water heating system works. A solar water heater captures the Sun's free solar energy that heats water that would otherwise be heated using your typical electric or natural gas water heater.

There are two types of solar heaters, either active or passive. Active heaters use pumps and controls to move fluids through the system. The second type is a passive heater. They depend on natural convection to move fluids through the entire system.

Solar hot water heating systems have two main components: the solar collector and a storage tank. Solar collectors capture the Sun's solar energy, then transforms that energy into heat water or a heat transfer fluid.

A heat transfer fluid is a nontoxic glycol antifreeze solution. This fluid is never mixed with water. The solution transfers its heat to water in the storage tank. The reason for using a heat transfer solution because in cold climates freezing temperatures prevent its use in the collector.

The hot water or fluid moves to a storage tank and available for your use.

Often your existing hot water heater storage tank is used. Solar heating storage tanks are exceptionally well insulated. Typically they are larger than a traditional hot water tank. This allows you access to hot water when the Sun is not available to heat water/heat transfer fluid in the collector. The increased size enables the storage of a large quantity of hot water available to you when the Sun doesn't heat water.

You can expect to get 50% to 80% of your water heating requirements. If you should live in areas with lower solar potential, larger solar panels are required.

Active solar heaters are suited for cold climates where freezing occurs. Since passive heaters, do not need any pumps they do not need any additional power to operate efficiently. These system are best suited where mild climate.

The selection and installation of a solar home heating system requires proper planning. The availability of adequate solar radiation, system type and size and taking advantage of solar incentives and financing. After all their is nothing new under the Sun.

Solar Electric / Solar Panels : Top Ten Reasons to Use Them

So you are thinking about making an investment in Solar? Well the time is right as there are multiple reasons why it makes sense now but also, it is important to know that the benefits of Solar Electric Systems will increase over time.

1. SOLAR PANELS SAVE MONEY EVERY MONTH AND FOREVER Solar will save you money on electricity costs and protect you from future rate increases.

Electricity rates are at an all time high and and are showing no signs of going down. Switching to solar will increasing your financial independence by locking in your future electric bills.

2. SOLAR ELECTRIC INCREASES HOME VALUES Solar Electric increases your home value and can even more then the cost of the solar electric system itself.

This 1998 study by ICF Consulting concluded that saving $1 per year on energy costs adds $20 to a home's value. A saving of $1,000 per year increases a home's value by $20,000.

3. THINK OF IT AS A CONSERVATIVE INVESTMENT In this current market, returns on a solar investment may be higher than your other investments.

These Massachusetts residents LuAnn Kuder and Maureen O'Brien found they "beat" Wall Street by investing in solar. Over the past 100 years, the stock market has returned just below 10% per year as an average. Solar electric ROI likely beats this, especially in states with high electricity costs.

4. FEEL GOOD ABOUT PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT Using solar power means less "brown power" produced by utility companies which means fewer emissions, less pollution, and a cleaner environment.

Most utility companies use coal and natural gas-fired power plants which emit greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides, radioactive materials, and heavy metals. So, power plants contribute to smog, acid rain, and global warming, affecting public health and our society's future.

5. INCREASING NATIONAL SECURITY Installing a solar electric system reduces all our dependence on foreign energy.

There is no denying that our nation is becoming more and more reliant on foreign energy sources. The U.S. currently imports the majority of its energy supplies and has imported 166,270 million cubic feet more natural gas every year since 1985.

6. MONEY AND JOBS STAY AT HOME Supporting renewable energy in the U.S. helps to improve our economy by keeping money and jobs at home. These jobs get created when you make the decision to go solar.

The study by Navigant Consulting illustrated that almost half a million permanent jobs and $232 billion in investment can be supported by the solar energy industry alone if Congress extends the federal tax rebates for solar for 8 years.

7. REDUCTION OF YOUR DEPENDENCE ON THE POWER GRID Solar electric systems are like a power plant on your roof, producing the energy you need clean, smart and efficient.

As 67% of the energy in fossil fuels is lost when it's converted to electricity it is inefficient, 9-10% is lost as heat when transported to your home. Using solar panels on your prevents wasting energy or money because all the power you make is used in your home.

8. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOLAR TAX CREDITS With the combination of state and federal solar tax credits, the cost of your solar electric system is significantly reduced.

Many states offer solar rebates as well, the most generous of which are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

9. NEWLY AFFORDABLE & BETTER TECHNOLOGY SOLAR OPTIONS As companies and local governments become better informed, solar electricity is becoming more and more affordable.

Companies and governments are innovating with financing and programs for homeowners to go solar electric Whether this is a city-sponsored solar loan, a home solar service (PPA), or a solar lease, the various options becoming available reduce upfront costs.

10. SPREAD THE WORD Get active and inspire your neighbors by being the first on your block to install a solar electric or solar power system.

Getting the Most Out of Your Portable Solar Charger

Portable solar chargers are appearing in many different forms.

They range from mobile phone-sized units with a single solar panel and a socket to accept the charger cable to large portable folding solar panels that close like a notebook.

Some mobile phones manufacturers are already playing around with the idea of integrating a solar panel into the back panel of a mobile phone to enable solar recharging in addition to the usual charger, but realistically that will probably not be economically justifiable because mobile phones are consumables that eventually become obsolete or just out of fashion. It creates another component to dispose of. We already have considerable environmental damage caused by irresponsible dumping of old electronics and should not add to that tally.

That idea is doomed to the same fate as the TV/ VCR ( who even remembers those?) Far better to have a separate solar cell that has universal charging capabilities. Then the the solar charger can be used to charge several personal devices. But, who knows, I might be wrong! we may soon see notebooks and PDA's with built-in solar panels too!

Getting back to our main topic; chargers that use the sun to generate electricity that is stored in a battery, to be used when required, make a very useful and environmentally friendly alternative to AC powered chargers. You can use them when you are camping for example, no need for long extension chords or noisy generators!

Some solar chargers and portable solar panels can be connected directly to a device that requires power, for instance the Soldius solar chargers have inbuilt voltage regulators with MPPT ( maximum power point tracking) electronics to charge a mobile phone more efficiently. It is an elegant portable solar charger with just the one socket to accept the charging cable and a selection of adapter tips that connect to a mobile phone or other personal device.

The Soldius is a small and compact unit but its lack of an internal storage battery means it can't store power for later use as the other solar chargers can, so it is actually more accurately a mini solar power generator with an integrated voltage regulator. True environmentalists see this as a plus because batteries are one of the worst offenders of environmental contamination by heavy metals. In fact the eco advocates would be pleased to hear that most solar chargers use eco friendly Li- Ion batteries. Lithium Ion cells are more eco friendly because they do not use heavy metals.

We should differentiate between solar chargers and portable solar panels.

A solar charger is a single unit able to store solar power for later use because It has internal batteries for storing the charge. Portable solar panels are units made up of one or more solar panels and sometimes an attached solar regulator like the the folding solar panels from Ecopia.

A useful feature of most solar chargers is the ability to charge its internal battery using other means than solar power such as USB port power from a computer or 12 volt power from a vehicle's accessories power socket if immediate solar power is not available. The green advocates might see this as a sell out to the 'evil brown energy' industry, but this need not be so, you might be running your laptop on solar power and a vehicle's battery is recharged while driving and normally has excess power to spare.

Not all solar battery chargers are capable of fully charging your mobile phone.

Why? because they are using the solar charger battery to recharge another battery and these solar batteries are usually not big enough to provide a complete recharge.

A typical solar battery has a capacity of 1000mAh and a typical mobile phone battery is 750mAh.

Now, you might think a 1000mAh battery should fully recharge a 750mAh battery, after all its 25% larger.

Not so. As the mobile phone battery is recharged it builds up internal resistance and the voltage of the solar charger battery just can't overcome this internal resistance once the phone battery has reached a certain level of charge.

Voltage (V) is electrical pressure equal to current flow (I) multiplied by resistance (R) V= IR

. The internal resistance of the solar charger battery decreases as its charge decreases and therefore its voltage decreases, but the opposite is occurring in the phone battery, as it is being charged up its internal resistance is increasing to the point where it is greater than the solar charger battery voltage so current stops flowing into it and it is no longer being charged. The better solar chargers have clever electronics to help to get the most out of the charger but at the end of the day you can't cheat physics and the only way to improve on this situation is to increase the solar charger battery size.

3 Things Not To Do When Making Your Own Solar Panel Installation

These are the 3 things not to do when you are making your own solar panel installation. Making your own solar panels and then installing them to collect solar power can be extremely profitable, but you have to be aware of these potential shortfalls:

Tip No1: Don't start building your solar panel before you have investigated your solar exposure

Solar panels can make a lot of electricity from solar energy if they are exposed to long hours of sunshine every day. On the other hand, if there is not enough sunshine brought to them, they are almost useless. So what can be done in that regard?

Before you even start planning your solar power installation, you should investigate the solar exposure of your location. Do you get enough exposure to the sun on a daily basis? Or are most of your days cloudy? Success in your endeavor to make electricity through solar power starts with confirming that you have the necessary proper natural conditions.

Tip No2: Don't buy the solar cells brand new without doing sufficient research

Here we are assuming that you are going to build your own solar panel. The major component for that would be solar cells. Solar cells can be purchased through various channels, and naturally the price you get through these various channels varies greatly. So what is the cheapest way to purchase your solar cells?

I thought that you would never ask! Naturally, you should not look into buying your cells brand new. First thing to do is to go to Ebay and look for good deals there. You could also use a small trick, which is finding partially damaged solar powered road signs, and then calling the construction company, which owns the panels and finding out whether they would be able to offer you a good deal for them.

Tip No3: Don't just assume that you can build your own solar panels without expert guidance

True, the main idea of Do It Yourself (and this is a Do It Yourself project) is to, you guessed it, do it yourself. Having said that, however, it is always best to get expert advice before and while you are doing your project. Why is that?

Well, to start off, you get better and faster, as well as more guaranteed results by following expert guidance. Furthermore, this specific project, making your own solar panels, is done for profit. Therefore, a little know-how investment will definitely have good Return on Investment, and will repay for itself in higher efficiency or overall better work of your panels.

These were the 3 don'ts you need to beware of when you are building your own solar panels. Building your own solar power installation is definitely doable, but you need to be careful that your area gets enough solar exposure, you need to get your materials cheap and you need to get expert advice. And what kind of expert advice exactly is out there? Just look at the links below, where you can find the answer to this question.

Solar Water Heating Systems

Solar hot water heating systems are a great way to effectively conserve energy and reduce your energy bill.

Contrary to popular belief, solar water heating is not a new technology. Solar water heating systems have been used commercially for over a century now, with the first commercial water heater (the Climax Solar-Water Heater) going on sale in 1891 in the United States. By the year 1900, over 1600 houses in California were equipped with this solar water heater.

Due to its effectiveness and low cost, the solar water heating gained popularity until, by 1941, more than half the population of Florida was getting its hot water through solar water heaters!

Solar water heating only lost its popularity as a result of lowered electricity rates, and an aggressive campaign by Florida Power and Light to increase electrical consumption. This was done by offering electric water heaters at bargain prices. Thus Florida's solar water heating was brought to halt.

The United States is not the only country with a solar water heating history. There are many other countries where solar water heating was used in the past and has since fallen out of use - but not all of them. In fact, currently more than ten million Japanese households heat their water using solar water heating systems. This is definite proof that it is a workable technology.

Important Facts about Solar Hot Water Heating Systems

  • Solar water heating can be used in any climate. Sound unbelievable? Check it out on the U.S. Department of Energy website. They say so as well.
  • The fuel used to run a solar water heater is sunshine. And, at the time of this writing, sunshine is free - no tax has been added yet.
  • A solar hot water heater can reduce your water heating bill by fifty to eighty percent. But with energy prices going up, the amount of savings (as compared to normal prices) will soon be even higher.
  • Aside from reducing your energy bill right now, a solar water heating system will protect you from future energy price increases. Your heating will no longer rely on fossil fuels for electricity.
  • When building a new home, or when refinancing, the economic aspect of this becomes even more interesting.

You can, for instance, include the cost of a solar water heater with a new thirty-year mortgage package. This would usually add up to about $13.00 -$20.00 a month. Federal income tax deductions for mortgage interest would reduce the payment for the solar water heater by about $3.00 -$5.00 per month.

If your fuel savings with a solar water heating system is $15.00 or more per month (which it likely will be) you will have reduced your monthly heating bill right then and there.

  • Solar water heating will significantly reduce your carbon footprint, and reduce the demand for fossil fuels which pollute the environment.
  • Solar heaters can be installed in combination with backup systems. In fact, you could install a solar water heater next to your existing system and make it possible switch to conventional water heating whenever necessary. This way you are guaranteed always to have hot water.

Types of Solar Hot Water Heating Systems

There are two types of solar water heating systems, active solar water heating systems and passive solar water heating systems. They both work on the same principles.

The only difference is that active systems have a pump or other mechanical means of moving the water through the solar heating systems, and passive systems rely on nature's principles: warm water rises to the top, and cold water sinks to the bottom. Therefore, with a passive solar water heating system, the water storage tank must always be positioned above the solar water heater collector.

Active Solar Hot Water Heating

There are two main designs of active water heating systems. Which one is best for you depends on the climate you live in.

There is what's called an "indirect circulation system" which uses a non-freezing heat-transfer fluid to transfer heat from the collector to a heat exchanger (a device used to transfer heat from the heat transfer fluid to the water in your storage tank). This is good for colder climates.

There is also the direct circulation system, where water is simply passed through solar heat collector and then routed to the water storage tank for use. This system works fine in milder climates.

Passive Solar Hot Water Heating

Passive solar water heating systems are usually cheaper than "active solar water heating systems," as they do not need controls or pumps to circulate the water.

But generally, they are not as effective as the active systems. If you live in a warm climate, a passive wate Article Source : http://www.articlesbase.com/home-and-family-articles/solar-water-heating-systems-570048.html

Solar Hot Water Panels

Solar hot water panels are one of the most cost-effective solutions to generate hot water for your home. Solar hot water systems can be used in any climate and since the fuel they use comes from the sun, the energy used to heat your water is absolutely free. Solar hot water panels use the sun to heat either water or a heat-transfer fluid in the collector and the heated water is then held in the storage tank ready for use.

Heating water represents the biggest energy use in your home and unlike traditional solar photovoltaic panels, solar hot water panels are less expensive, which means that you will get your return on investment much more quickly with solar water heating.

There are three types of collectors for solar hot water panels, the first is integrated collector storage which combines the solar collector and storage tank all in one, the second type and most commonly used, are flat plate collectors which are more suitable when tank roof mounting is used. The third type are evacuated tubes which are more efficient than flat plate collectors and are great for use in cold regions that are prone to frost.

Selecting the right solar collector for a solar hot water heater it very important and doing your homework in advance will ensure that your solar hot water panels will meet the needs of the particular solar heating design needed for your home.

Integrated Collector Storage

Integrated collector storage hot water heaters are created by having the collector and the storage component of the solar hot water heater integrated into one unit. These collectors are used in passive solar water heating designs. Also known as ICS or batch systems, integrated collector storage systems feature one or more tanks or tubes in an insulated, glazed box.

ICS systems work by passing cold water through the solar collector to preheat the water. The heated water then continues on to the conventional backup water heater, providing a reliable source of hot water. ICS systems should only be installed in mild-freeze climates since the outdoor pipes could freeze in severe, cold weather.

Flat Plate Collectors

Flat plate collectors have been around for several decades and work by using copper pipes that run through a glass covered collector which are usually connected to a water storage tank on the roof. With flat plate solar hot water panels, the hot water can flow back and forth, in and out of the tank, which continuously heats the water. Flat plate solar hot water panels are primarily used in active solar water heating systems, solar pool water heaters, as well as space heating systems. Flat plate collectors get there name from their appearance. They are essentially made up of a flat absorber plate that is enclosed in a very light weight metallic frame which is usually made up of aluminum.

There are two types of flat plate collectors, glazed and unglazed solar collectors.

Glazed flat plate collectors are well insulated and are cased inside of a weatherproofed box that contains a dark absorber plate under one or more glass or plastic covers. Absorber coatings are placed on the absorber plate, to assist with the collection of solar radiation. The coatings used will vary from model to model. It's important to note that some coatings perform better than others. Bonded to the metallic absorber plate are risers. The risers are designed to contain the circulated fluid throughout the solar hot water heater. Depending on the systems' design, the fluid can be either water or some type of heat transfer fluid.

Inside the enclosed frame of the solar hot water panels is a layer of insulation. The frame if the panels is covered, or glazed, with a single layer of glass or special plastic. The panel glazing is very important because it must allow as much solar radiation in, while insulating as much of the heat that is gathered as possible.

Unglazed flat plate collectors are generally used for solar pool heating. They have a dark absorber plate that is made of metal or polymer, usually aluminum, and unlike glazed flat plate collectors, they are not covered or enclosed.

Evacuated Tube Collectors

Evacuated tube collectors are primarily used in active solar water heating systems and space heating systems. They get there name because of they're appearance. They are made up of several absorber plates, each one is coupled with absorber coatings, and each plate and coating is covered by a glass tube. Evacuated tube collectors use parallel rows of transparent glass tubes. Each glass tube contains a copper absorber pipe which runs through the center of the tube and is attached to a fin. The coating of the fin absorbs solar energy from the sun but also inhibits radiative heat loss. Each copper pipe is connected to a Article Source : http://www.articlesbase.com/remodeling-articles/solar-hot-water-panels-3623260.html

Solar Energy Efficiency | Grants For Solar Energy Efficiency

Converting to home solar power is a hot topic in 2010. Everywhere in the news there is something about global warming, ice caps melting, oil prices going up, energy costs skyrocketing, etc. What can you do as a homeowner to protect yourself from these increasing home expenses? One option is installing home solar power systems.

Convert Home To Solar Power - Make A Difference

If you live in a location of the U.S. that can take advantage of solar power, you might consider converting some if not all of your home's energy needs to solar. Even if you do not live in an area where you can completely convert your home to solar, you can support public policies to encourgage those in other areas to install residential solar power. Why? Because for every kilowatt that someone in another part of the country can save, your energy bill where you live can either not rise as fast or remain steady or even perhaps go down.

Solar Power Is Beneficial But Not Perfect
No energy source is perfect. They all have their good points and their bad points. This includes solar power. Below are some advantages and disadvantages to residential solar power

Residential Solar Power Advantages

Solar energy for all practicable purposes will never run out. It is completely 100% renewable.

Once beyond the production of solar panels and support frames etc. there are no adverse environmental impacts with using solar power.

Sunlight is free, it is everywhere - albeit limited in some places for certain parts of the year - and no one owns it. There would be no wars or territorial battles over sunlight. It keeps on shining no matter what government entity is in power.

Systems and technology already exists to make a difference now. For example, solar hot water heaters are already being in used in homes. Pools are already heated by solar panels, and some homes are already not using any power from their local electic company - they are completely off the grid.

Solar power is very versatile, it can used to produce electricity for lights and motors and other electrical devices and appliances, hot water, and heat.

Home solar units are quite portable from the manufacturer to your home making them easy to get.

Solar power systems for the home have very low maintenace requirements, are inherently designed to last a long time, quiet, and getting smaller and easier to "hide" on your property.

There are many local, state and federal grants available providing tax incentives to homeowners who install residential solar power systems. Additionally, there are some Utility companies around the U.S. that provide rebates and buyback programs for homeowners who install solar systems.

Residential Solar Power Disadvantages

Because the sun either doesn't shine enough, or is very weak in the sky, residential solar systems are not appropriate for every locale in the U.S. With this being the case, mass general support for solar energy will be limited mostly to those who can use it. In other words, it will take longer to get policies and programs that require solar systems to be installed passed by local, state and national governments.

While solar power is long lasting and makes sense to many people, nobody wants the big solar panels in their view. As an Urban Planner, this term is known at NIMBY - Not In My Back Yard. Unfortunately, until public attitudes about solar power farms changes, it will make developing photo voltaic cell stations expensive and hightly political - to the point of holding up progress for the sake of opinion, feelings, emotions versue the real good they can provide to impact the U.S. glutton for disposable energy.

While there are incentives to purchasing and installing residential solar power, the upfront costs are expensive which will keep many who would want to make a shift to a solar home from doing so.

Solar power technology only effectively works when the sun is shining. As such, storing electricity for times of no sunlight requires enormous battery space. More than probably needed space and resources are needed to produce and harness solar power because solar panels are only somewhere around 28% efficient for converting the sun's rays into usable forms of electricity and heat.
With these pros and cons now presented, it is likely that solar power is going to continue to become an increasingly important part of the U.S. energy industry. The question is, are you going to wait to do something about it, or are you going to get started with converting your home to solar power today.

Find Out A Lot Of Ways On Using The Solar Heat Effectively

Solar energy technologies supply a clean, renewable and domestic energy source. Solar power is that energy source. Solar energy proper for air-conditioning is formed by generating use of Winpin energy-saving glass. Himin also gives solar PV lighting approach and solar goods for domestic makes use of.

Presently, there's a demand for allocating enhanced resources in solar researches. Rather than the old kinds of depletable energy (coal, oil, nuclear), solar power delivers a clean renewable sort of energy.

Solar power systems could possibly be fairly pricey to install. You are going to find several local, state, and federal tax incentives and rebates that could aid to cover the expense; even so it is still slightly bit initial investment. Solar power is far more reliable, cleaner plus eco-friendly. As governments are beginning to consider these rewards, the demand of solar energy application will ultimately minimize solar energy expense.

Solar energy is crucial for the survival of all varieties of life on the planet. Solar power is undoubtedly being an alternate source of energy. Solar heated Water could be utilized to heat a framework by Hydronics (see our Hydronics page). In a Hydronics plan hot water is run by indicates of PEX tubes inside the floor. Solar heat is going to be able to really help cool your home.

Solar heat could be accustomed to generate electrical energy making use of the right components. Nevertheless, solar energy is typically an ample source of free of charge of charge solar power. Solar heat is split into two groups, that are the exact similar as the groups of solar energy; active and passive. Active heating systems utilize radiation to heat objects indirectly creating use of a generator which turns the sun's energy to heat. Solar heaters of this sort heat the water as it's pumped via the plan and is also then brought back into the pool. Pumps are needed with this sort of approach to acquire the water through the panels and back into the pool.

Solar heat moves through the glass after which absorbed through the dark surface. This heat is stashed inside the wall, exactly where it definitely is performed steadily inward through the masonry. Solar heating collectors are about 4 occasions a lot far more helpful than solar electric panels, and (as a result) you only want 1/4 the region for the identical quantity of heat. Solar heating has in no way been a great deal extra cost-effective.

Solar heat pump technologies unite energy from the air temperatures, with aid from electrical energy even without getting the assist from energy received from sunshine. Inside the case of solar geysers, this cannot be the case due to the reality that solar geysers will need sunshine so that you can run appropriately. Solar heat to power making use of a Stirling engine is really a thought that is about for an extended time and has close economics to PV together with other technologies. It appears to be Infinia has enhanced the engine to some extent specifically where management of the engine (huge O&M expense inside the past) is very low. Solar energy panels are normally in use on rooftops for fairly a couple of years including new thin-foil photo-voltaic cells which may rapidly shingle. Economics also include local and remote use.

With the mounting costs of living, we really need to use the alternative sources of energy like solar power and wind power for our home. Solar power panels are one of the best alternative sources of energy for your home. This wide resource of energy can be tapped with an initial investment that will pay for itself over the period of time. Instead of using the non-renewable resources of energy and paying large amount of money on bills, one can use solar power panels which will help you in saving your money.

These residential homes use almost forty to seventy percent of the power from solar power systems which gives a huge saving over a period of time. The costs of solar power panels will vary depending on the solar power panel you choose for your home. The solar panels have high storage capacity.

There are ample benefits of using solar energy as an alternative source of energy. Some of them are listed below:

  1. It is a renewable source of energy, so we never have to worry about the running out of sunlight or using it all up.

  2. Solar energy is environmentally friendly. Unlike fossil fuels solar energy did not release any green house gases into air.

  3. Solar panels for your home are very reliable, because they don't have any moving parts.

  4. Solar cells did not make any noise in collecting the energy.

  5. For a longer use, solar energy is much cheaper than buying electricity from the company.

  6. You may find number of solar panels which are divided into two categories electricity production (photovoltaic or PV technology) and water heating (solar thermal or flat plate technology).

  7. No electricity is required while using the solar panels. Imagine never paying another monthly bill or hook-up charge.

  8. You may sell extra electricity. If you build a large solar panel system, you can draw backward your electricity bills. Contact your local power companies for more details.

  9. Government tax credits. There are some government rules which provide some kind of tax credit or incentive for people purchasing solar energy systems usually covers 20-30% of the system cost. Contact your local representatives for more details.

10.  The installation of solar panels are increased almost 50% every year, most of them are homemade systems.

Even though solar energy is a free of cost and a renewable source of energy, still it has some drawbacks that we must consider. One very obvious point is that solar energy cannot be processed at night. So this cuts back its proficiency rate. In order to overcome such problems, some scientists are working on maximizing the storage capacity of solar energy during the day time which in turn increases the productivity of solar energy panels.

Solar Panel Systems Help in Climatic Development

Solar Thermal Systems in addition to its environmental benefits, the report shows solar energy to be a sustainable way to address concerns about energy security and volatile fossil fuel prices, as well as a substantial factor in economic development.

Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar radiation, along with secondary solar-powered resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for most of the available renewable energy on earth. Only a minuscule fraction of the available solar energy is used.

Solar powered electrical generation relies on heat engines and photovoltaics. Solar energy's uses are limited only by human ingenuity. A partial list of solar applications includes space heating and cooling through solar architecture, potable water via distillation and disinfection, daylighting, solar hot water, solar cooking, and high temperature process heat for industrial purposes. To harvest the solar energy, the most common way is to use solar panels.

Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.

The location of your home can play a considerable role in your quest to enjoy a solar energy home. For solar energy to work, your own panels need to obtain sunshine. Not just the positioning of the solar panels can be crucial, however the place of your house as the landscaping can also may play a role in the amount of power you can use through the sun.

Solar systems don't require the use of water to be able to make electricity; actually, solar-thermal technologies could tap local water sources, and the water can easily be re-used as soon as it has been condensed from vapor into water. Solar energy is transformation of sun light directly into electric energy.

A solar power cell, frequently called a solar power cell or PV, is definitely the technology utilized to convert solar instantly in to power. Shaded areas, such as partly shaded, are usually not suitable for solar installation.

Solar energy panels are generally the equipment which changes light in to electrical energy. These equipment are often known to as solar energy panels, since sun rays is the often the chief method to obtain power used. Solar energy systems can be attained with a couple methods, professionally and also homemade.

To put this simply, your own solar panel collects the suns energy that may be transformed into electricity for your residence. Solar energy cells are generally geared up to create a flow of electrons, in other words, electricity, as they accumulate protons from the sun, which usually displace neutrons in the electrical energy process.

Solar energy panels come in either versatile and unbending formats. The versatile kinds are usually ideal for light, intermittent usage as well as are generally not too expensive. Solar energy solar panels are generally able to harness the energy obtained from the sunshine.

Hence, the use of solar power panels is actually ecologically friendly. Solar power panels, also known as photo voltaic (PV) panels, usually are made of materials that concentrate the sun's rays. As soon as the sun's rays strike a PV panel, the energy is assimilated by the panel.Solar energy panels are built of distinctive supplies, commonly silicon, called semiconductors.

A solar energy home can certainly be achieved through several different types of solar technology power; passive solar, thermal solar, photovoltaics and slender film. Passive solar and thermal modifications do not need the use of solar technology panels and are therefore the most cost efficient technique to get a solar energy home.

Setting solar right now usually means cash saved in the future. Setting up a photovoltaic solar energy collection and distribution system to your residence less expensive than you may imagine and it will commence saving you cash coming from the initial day you utilize it. Solar Powered Lights - How Must They Work?

Sunshine is the foremost way to obtain light in the daytime; after it sets, we will need to count on other electrical equipment to light our homes, offices, markets and streets. These days, we are able to conserve the sunlight throughout the day and employ it in the evening with solar powered lights.

This is one way solar powered lights work. The solar power panels have to be installed and placed outside where they could have the maximum sunlight to get the solar heat, the solar power is saved in battery power once charged, technology-not only for lighting in the evening. Solar lighting is not dim anymore while they was previously in past, because of ultra bright LEDs, modern solar lighting is bright enough to deliver decent lighting for almost any occasions.

Store the Sun's Light

For hundreds of years, humanity has revolved across the sun, setting schedules to its light patterns about the Earth. Sunlight seems within our sky, bringing light, leave, taking it by it. During the past many years, however, methods happen to be devised that permit man to store that sunlight and grow it out again, regardless if sunlight is down. Many homes will have solar-powered lighting. Driveways and walkways are lined together, plants and objects are illuminated by them, and addresses are produced visible by them, amongst other things. A solar-powered light comprises of four basic things: a solar cell, batteries, the light source along with a switch.

Solar panels

This really is all granted with solar panel systems or solar panels because they are often called. Solar panels convert light energy into electrical power mainly because it makes contact. The bigger the room the solar panels use up, the harder electricity is produced, as well as the better the sunshine which you can use. However, this energy has to be stored to use when it's needed, individuals don't light through the sun.

Batteries

Front view of functioning homemade solar powered flashlight
The force in the solar panels is saved in a variety of batteries, determined by how bright the sunshine has to be and the way long it has to last. The solar panels feed electricity towards the batteries as the sun shines the entire day.

Light

Any light may be used. The number of choices is based on the solar panel's size as well as the total battery capacity. Most solar lights use LEDs simply because they emit relatively high levels of light to the level of electricity they will use, allowing a fantastic solar light to glow until morning.

Switch

It won't help anyone in the event the solar panels charge electricity simply to contain it immediately worn-out through the light. The electricity should see batteries alone inside daytime and feed the ability in the batteries towards the light when it is night. A switch of some variety will make sure that this solar-powered light isn't expending energy prior to it being needed. The regular switch for any solar-powered light is often a photocell, or photo resistor circuit (photocell differs coming from a solar cell). It is then so power is directed at the sunshine individuals no light shining for the photocell. Other solar powered lights like a solar-charged flashlight will never make use of a photocell being a switch. In such cases a fairly easy button switch does the secret.
